Building a well before I’m thirsty
Every other month I freak out and think I need a job. I run my own thing full time, and mostly I love that, but the income wobbles and my brain responds on a schedule. For a long time the freak-out meant an evening of doomscrolling job boards, feeling worse with every listing, then closing the tab and doing nothing. So I built a well before I’m thirsty. Claude now runs my job search for me, every week, on a schedule. It knows my resume, it knows my criteria, and it searches real Indeed listings against both. If something interesting comes along, I’ll apply for it. I’d rather do it relaxed like that than frantically and desperate.
To be clear about results: it runs weekly, most of what’s out there doesn’t clear my bar, and once in a while a genuine keeper shows up. Nothing has pulled me away from my business, and that was never the goal. The goal was making the panic pointless, because the search is already happening without me.
What does an AI job search actually do?
An AI job search is a standing set of instructions Claude runs against live job listings. Mine does four things on every run: it searches Indeed for listings matching my criteria, checks each one against my actual resume instead of a generic candidate, filters out my dealbreakers before I ever see them, and reports a short ranked list with pay and direct links. If nothing clears the bar, it says so in one line and stops.
That last rule matters more than it looks. A job board’s job is to show you as many listings as possible. Your scout’s job is the opposite: to show you almost nothing, and be right about it.
How do you set up an AI job search with Claude?
The whole setup is four steps, and the first three take about ten minutes total.
Step 1: Connect Indeed to Claude. In a Claude chat, click the plus button in the lower left, hover over Connectors, and pick Manage connectors. Find Indeed in the directory, click Connect, and sign in with your Indeed account (create one if you don’t have one, it’s the standard signup). You can also browse the whole connector directory under Settings. Connectors work on every Claude plan, including free.
Step 2: Upload your resume. This is the part I’d call the trick of the whole thing. Instead of describing what you’re qualified for, you hand Claude the file that already says it. From then on, “does this job fit me” gets judged against your real work history, not your modest self-summary. If your resume lives in a Claude Project, even better, every search can see it.
Step 3: Give it your criteria. Mine went something like: remote, part-time, here’s what I’m good at, find me the best paying matches. The generator below writes a sharper version of this for you, with your dealbreakers filtered out up front.
Step 4: Schedule it. This is what turns a search into a scout. In Claude, open Scheduled in the left sidebar, click New task, choose Set up manually, paste your search prompt, and set it to weekly. Scheduled tasks need a paid Claude plan (Pro and up). You can bump it to daily if you’re actively looking, but weekly is the calm setting, and calm is the point for me right now.
No paid plan, or not ready to schedule anything? Skip step 4 and run the search live instead: paste the one-time version of the prompt into a chat and refine the results with Claude in real time. Same search, you’re just the one pressing the button.

One tip for the criteria: put a real number in the pay floor. “Decent pay” gives the AI nothing to filter on. “Skip anything under $25 an hour” deletes half the junk before you see it.

Yes. With the Indeed connector plus Claude’s scheduled tasks, a search runs on a schedule (weekly, daily, or weekdays) with no input from you, and each run reports listings matching your criteria. The scheduling part needs a paid Claude plan. On free, you run the same search manually in a chat.
Do I need to be job hunting to set this up?
No, and it works better when you’re not. A standing weekly search costs you nothing and means that if you ever do need a job, you’re already three months into looking. That beats starting a search on the worst possible day, which is the day you need one.
Is the Indeed connector free to use?
The connector itself is available on every Claude plan, including free. You connect it once with your Indeed account and Claude can then search live listings in any chat. Only the scheduled, runs-by-itself version requires a paid Claude plan.
Will the AI apply to jobs for me?
No, and mine isn’t allowed to. It searches, filters, and ranks. Applying stays with me, which is where it should stay, because a batch of auto-sent generic applications is worse than three real ones. The scout’s job ends at “this one’s worth your time.”
How is this better than Indeed job alerts?
An email alert matches keywords. The AI search judges each listing against your actual resume, applies your dealbreakers, skips things that don’t state pay if you tell it to, and gives you a one-line reason each match fits. It also stays quiet when nothing qualifies, which alerts never do.
